Are You Really Too Old — or Does Your Body Just Need a Little More Preparation?

Have you ever thought, “I guess I’m just getting old”?
Maybe you used to run, ski, hike or play tennis without thinking twice about it.
Now your knee hurts after a long walk, your back complains after gardening, or you think twice before getting down on the floor because you’re not entirely sure how easily you’ll get back up.
It’s easy to blame age.
But getting older doesn’t mean you have to stop doing the things you love.
When We’re Young, We Can Get Away
With A LOT
When we’re young, it can feel like youth is coursing through our veins. Our bodies repair and recover incredibly quickly.
At 20, you can practically lie on the couch for six months, wake up one Saturday morning and decide, “I’m going to hike the Grouse Grind today!”
You might be sore afterward, but somehow your body manages.
As we get older, those repair and recovery processes slow down. Our bodies become less forgiving when we suddenly ask them to do something they haven’t been prepared for.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t hike the Grouse Grind anymore.
It means you may need to do a little preparation before your activities and a little more maintenance for your body.
That’s a very different message from, “You’re getting old, so you should stop.”
Prepare Your Body for the Life You Want
Think about what you want your body to be able to do over the next 10, 20 or 30 years.
Do you want to ski?
Travel and walk around a new city all day?
Play tennis or pickleball?
Go hiking?
Run?
Garden?
Get onto the floor to play with your grandchildren—and get back up again?
Your body needs to maintain the physical abilities required to do those things.
Unfortunately, when people develop pain, they often start doing less.
“My knee hurts, so I stopped hiking.”
“My back bothers me, so I don’t exercise anymore.”
“I’m worried about falling, so I don’t go for walks by myself.”
Over time, doing less can mean losing strength, mobility and balance. Eventually the activity really does become harder—but not simply because you got older.
Your body may have lost some of the abilities that activity requires. See the abilities below, these are the things we assess and here’s the good news: Those abilities can be changed! Either through physio treatments or targeted exercises.
Find Out What YOUR Body Needs
At The National Women’s Show: The Ultimate Girls’ Day Out on September 19 & 20, I’m bringing a team to help you figure that out.
Come see us for a FREE physiotherapy assessment.
My team will test things such as your:
Range of motion
Strength
Balance
Functional movement
Special orthopedic tests
Then you’ll actually sit down with a physiotherapist who will interpret your results.
We’ll help you understand where you may be compensating, what your body is doing well, what needs improvement, and what you can start changing to help you become pain-free and continue doing the activities you love.
Click here to watch a video about what the assessment is like.
And while you’re at the show, come watch my seminar:
Saturday, Sept. 19 @ 2pm. Seminar Schedule here.
I’ll be teaching some of my favourite pain-relieving movements and showing you what you can do to keep your body active and capable as you age.
Getting older may mean your body needs a little more attention.
It does not mean you have to give up the life you love.
